Human & Artificial Stupidity

In Human & Artificial Stupidity, Selmar Smit explores a simple but important assumption: AI is less intelligent than we often assume... and so are humans. AI excels at pattern recognition, scale and prediction, but remains limited by its data, objectives and assumptions. Humans, meanwhile, are shaped by cognitive biases that can lead to confidently wrong decisions. The keynote shows that effective human-AI collaboration depends on understanding both artificial and human “stupidities.” Better teams emerge when we recognize our own blind spots, understand those of others, and combine complementary strengths rather than expecting either humans or machines to be infallible.

In his keynote Human & Artificial Stupidity, Selmar Smit explores a simple but important assumption: artificial intelligence is not nearly as intelligent as we sometimes think... and neither are humans. AI is exceptionally good at recognizing patterns, processing vast amounts of data and making predictions at a scale no human could match. But it does not understand the world in the way people do. It depends on the data, objectives and assumptions we provide, and can confidently produce completely wrong outcomes when those foundations are flawed.

Humans have similar limitations. We like to see ourselves as rational decision-makers, but our thinking is shaped by numerous cognitive biases. These biases help us simplify a complex world, but they can also lead us to make surprisingly poor decisions while remaining convinced that we are right. Through a series of experiments, the keynote makes both human and artificial “stupidities” tangible.

Crucially, these weaknesses do not always cancel each other out. Human biases can reinforce the weaknesses of AI, creating outcomes that are worse than either human or machine would produce alone: sometimes, 1 + 1 = -1.

The challenge is therefore not simply to make AI smarter, but to build better human-machine teams. Effective collaboration requires understanding the limitations of the technology, recognizing the blind spots of others and, perhaps most importantly, knowing your own.

Supply Chain Risk and the Circles of Trust

#Security #Hacking #Pentesting #Pentesten #Hacken
Cyber risk doesn't stop at our front door!

While Achmea, with the renewed IT strategy ‘Pushing Boundaries’, is focusing on AI, Europe and resilience, dependence on SaaS, multi-cloud and external suppliers is also growing. It is precisely there that it becomes clear that security is more than complying with laws, policies, security certificates and contracts.

In the first part of this session, Peter Stegeman (Pentester) shows what can go wrong on the back end: in suppliers' "kitchens" where data, processes and systems come together. Using real-world examples from ethical hacking, red teaming and supply chain risk, it becomes clear how vulnerabilities in the chain can lead to major risks for Achmea’s crown jewels… customer data.

But these are all findings from the back end and often discovered when it is almost too late to intervene. That is why Martijn de Laat (GISO) takes you through the second part of the session and shifts the focus to a front-end solution: Circles of Trust.

Because how do we, alongside DORA, security certificates and agreements, pentests and audit reports, get a more realistic picture of a supplier’s cyber resilience? Martijn will explain everything about defining comfort levels and making targeted choices — from helping suppliers improve to simply parting ways with a supplier.

This session is about ‘Pushing Boundaries’: pushing boundaries safely, strengthening supplier resilience, and working together to ensure risks don’t only become visible when it’s already too late.

Low-Code, Real Code:
What AI development in ODC actually looks like

#AI #Development #ODC #OutSystems #Legacy
We built our first production application with AI Mentor in ODC. It was fast, much faster than we are used to. However, AI was not a magic bullet: the code did not apply our standards and needed more work.

You will see:
• a look behind the scenes of low-code development,
• a live demo of AI-assisted development, including the parts that went wrong,
• fresh results from a real legacy-replacement case, good or bad,
• realistic time and cost figures, and why AI development alone will not halve development costs today.

We will also share what this platform is great at, which types of Achmea-projects are a good fit for it, and what type of work is better off elsewhere.

You leave with our learnings on what kind of development work AI can take over and what still needs experienced engineers. And you'll get the practical lessons we picked up along the way.

Not working with low code? Much of what we found applies to AI-assisted development anywhere. We just happen to work in a platform where the output is an application model instead of text.

Turning Customer Contact into Customer Insight: AI in the Contact Center

#Data #AI #Contactcenter #CustomerInsights #Elkedagbeter
Every day, customers tell us where processes fall short and where services can be improved through their interactions with our contact center. The real value lies not in individual customer signals, but in uncovering the patterns behind thousands of contacts every day.

Using AI-powered summarisation, we analyze customer interactions at scale. For each contact, a Large Language Model (LLM) identifies elements such as the reason for contact, customer sentiment, and sources of frustration. We use these insights to drive structural improvements in our processes and to reduce administrative effort during customer interactions.

The Open-Heart Surgery Nobody Noticed

IKAZ is the digital heart of the Zilveren Kruis healthcare chain. This business-critical system processes policies, claims, applications, and changes. MIAZ provides the management information derived from this data. Together, these systems form an essential link in the services provided to customers and employees.

The migration of IKAZ and MIAZ to Microsoft Azure was compared to open-heart surgery: the organization's digital heart had to be replaced while all business processes continued to run uninterrupted. Despite the scale, complexity, and critical dependencies involved, the transition was virtually invisible to customers and employees alike.

No disruptions, minimal post-migration support, and a platform ready for future growth. This session explores how technology, collaboration, and courage came together to successfully deliver one of the largest and most complex IT migrations within Achmea.

Designing for tomorrow: Azure Landingzones in Achmea

#Azure #Fundament #Landingzone
When using Azure at Achmea, the primary goal is to deliver value quickly without having to reinvent the wheel every time or repeatedly engage in security and compliance discussions. To support this, the Cloud Team provides two key capabilities: the Azure Foundation as a standardized platform layer (covering networking, identity, logging, monitoring, access management), and ESLZ (Enterprise Scaled Landing Zones), pre-configured landing zones that are deployed through Infrastructure as Code. This enables platform and delivery teams to deploy workloads independently, using built-in guardrails and standardized components, while ensuring the underlying foundation remains reliable, compliant, and repeatable.
In this session, you will get a unique behind-the-scenes look at how we apply our Azure Foundation (ESLZ) in practice, including the key architectural decisions we have made and the lessons learned along the way.

Choose Your Own Future: Achmea 2030

#innovation #trends #AI #resilience #future
The future rarely unfolds exactly as predicted. The choices we make today can lead to very different outcomes later. In this interactive session, Ellen Pols and Brian Heiblom from Achmea’s Innovation & Experience Center use insights from Gartner and other technology trend research to explore possible versions of 2030. Along the way, the audience makes choices, and each choice has consequences. We discuss what those consequences could mean for Achmea and which questions we should already be asking ourselves today.

What could Achmea look like in 2030? In this session, we use a choose-your-own-story format to look at what today’s technology choices could mean for Achmea. You decide what happens next. Each choice leads to a different outcome. Based on the audience’s votes, we show where those choices could lead and link them to the trends we are watching in the I&EC Technology Trend Report. You will leave with a clearer sense of which technology questions deserve our attention now, and why these choices matter for Achmea. So, will your choices help Achmea thrive, or send us over the cliff?

Beyond engagement: applying conversion modeling in Pega Customer Decision Hub

Many organizations steer their decision-making based on engagement. But does this always align with their real goals? In this session, we show how we added conversion modeling to Pega Customer Decision Hub. This is one of the first implementations worldwide.

We focus on:
• Why engagement alone was not sufficient
• How we steer on internal KPIs instead of only click behavior
• How we use conversion and engagement models side by side
• How we compare decision-making between both approaches
• Key design choices and lessons learned

We share how this leads to different choices in prioritization and personalization. And what insights this provides for decisioning in practice

Shared understanding as a design activity: lessons learned from a technical project in software development

#ProblemSpaceExploration #SharedUnderstanding #Modelling
Software systems can be complex not because the domain itself is difficult, but because concepts are represented differently across people, processes, and technology.

During a recent software project, the biggest issue was not technical implementation but aligning divergent representations of the same concept. What seemed obvious to domain experts appeared in software through technical abstractions, implicit assumptions, and configuration choices that obscured the underlying intent.

This session explores how shared understanding was created across stakeholders, systems, and implementation concerns. Using a practical case study, it shows the value of making implicit knowledge explicit, reducing conceptual complexity, and treating understanding itself as part of the design process.

I discuss the results as well as limitations of this approach, and why simplicity tends to be the hardest design challenge.

Putting the IT in Sustainability

#Duurzaamheid #Sustainability #ESG #GroenDoen
Sustainability is still a broad and vague concept for many people. Yet the need to take action is becoming increasingly evident. Aside from Achmea's own ambitions, legal and regulatory requirements are also growing. Translating sustainability into what it specifically means for IT can be challenging at times. That is why I would like to take you behind the scenes and start a conversation about where YOU think we still have opportunities to become more sustainable!

Whatever happened to 'surfing the net'?

#dead internet theory
When was the last time you just went online to discover random stuff on the web? We've come a long way from the earlier days of the Internet, but in the process we might have lost some things, the Internet has become less fun. People are frequently lamenting the state of the Internet and even proclaiming we're heading towards a 'dead Internet'. Surprisingly, when you look at the terrible fate of Dutch video game websites, we might've seen this all seen coming. One thing is for certain, it's all thanks to Ed Blocker.

The Next Chapter of Enterprise Virtualization on Azure — Powered by ARO

Virtual machines aren't going away — but the way we operate them is changing. In this session, we'll explore how ARO Virtualization brings VMs and containers together on a managed application platform in Azure, giving infrastructure and application teams a more consistent way to deploy, operate, automate, and scale workloads.

For organizations with established virtualization environments, this isn't about changing everything overnight. It's about understanding where a platform-based operating model can fit, which workloads can benefit, and how virtualization is increasingly becoming part of the broader application platform.

We'll also look ahead at how this model is evolving — and what the next level of abstraction for running VMs on Azure could look like.

Security AI Agents: using AI for Threat Intelligence

#AgenticAI #Cybersecurity #ThreatIntelligence #DigitalResilience
Security AI Agents (SAIA) is a knowledge-building project that aims to develop a clearer understanding of how agentic AI can be used reliably, transparently, and effectively in enterprise cybersecurity operations. As the cybersecurity sector faces a shortage of skilled professionals, practitioners must operate in increasingly complex IT environments while responding to a growing number of sophisticated and rapidly evolving cyber threats that often outpace traditional security measures.

We examine whether AI-driven automation can help address these challenges by combining human expertise with intelligent automation, enabling organizations to strengthen their cybersecurity posture and operate more efficiently.
